jaume collet-serra's non-stop is a diverting-enough thriller with a solid set-up and an mind-numbingly stupid final act. the action thriller, which stars liam neeson as a traumatized air marshal who finds himself at 30,000 feet with a mysterious killer on board, has some great elements to it but there's just too much weighing it down to really fly. neeson is perfectly acceptable as bill marks, and he carries the weariness well. this is a standard neeson action role and there's nothing wrong with that. the rest of the cast (julianne moore, lupita nyong'o, michelle dockery, anson mount, corey stoll) are just fine for what they need to be; no one stands out as doing a great job but they all fulfill the film's needs.
collet-serra makes good use of the plane as a tight, claustrophobic environment and finds good use for the various locations available to him. the action is mostly good until that horrendous final act, which is where everything falls apart. nothing goes well in the last act, from the reveal of the killer and their ridiculously shoe-horned motivations (because we must make a statement, after all) to the sudden drop into action cliches, the dopey denouement and every other second. the film wasn't anything special but was moving along quite nicely until this moment, and then it free-falls into absurdity.
that being said, is non-stop a complete waste of time? absolutely not. but it isn't great even at its best, and generally it just settles for average until it sinks well below that point. this is a rental at best.
