mcfarland usa perfectly illustrates what disney does best. they take inoffensive stories that aren't challenging to the current social structure, take no risks cinematically, add no innovative or challenging elements, take all of the normal genre trappings and then execute them well.
to me, that's kind of a boring approach. often, there isn't really anything interesting going on because of their aversion to risk and taking chances. of course, it makes sense that they do this. disney is really good at running a business and the movies they make often reflect the business side of things. to take a risk or to say anything that could upset the social order would be too risky to a films profit margins for them to produce it. so, they don't. that's why their movies are homogenized to a certain point. even marvel reflects this attitude to some extent
mcfarland usa applies the white savior narrative to a story about a inspirational football coach that begins to coach cross country at a poor school in the agrarian region of california. that's all i have to say about hte film. it develops exactly as you would think it would. each shot is exactly what you think it will be. every performance is adequate.
to me, there is just nothing interesting about this film at all. is it poorly made? no. is it worth seeing? probably not.
