rob cohen's latest film the boy next door is the definition of mediocre. the sexual thriller basically takes the standard "male teacher sleeps with crazy student" trope and genderswaps it as a star vehicle for jennifer lopez. the film hits all of the standard beats of the genre: lonely teacher, seemingly sweet guy who turns out to be crazy but charms everyone around him, a dark secret from the past to be uncovered, best friend who is clearly in danger at some point in the film, et cetera.
it would all be intolerable if not for the cast, who do their best to make it work. lopez is fine in the lead role, conjuring some amount of sympathy for her character, while ryan guzman is an affable enough villain. kristin chenoweth and john corbett do okay work in thankless roles, while cohen films the whole thing in a perfectly acceptable manner that does nothing to help it stand out. the boy next door is completely forgettable, but it could have been much worse.
