the babadook: is it a ghost story? or is a possession story? or a haunted house story? or a slasher/stalker film? in truth it's all of the above and it is one of the best horror movies i have seen in a while. it's as good as all the critics (and people) have said. it's haunting and original and truly scary. it's really well acted and it looks beautiful (as much as scary can look beautiful that is). it also goes places you don't expect which is rare. the best thing about this movie is that at no point does it fall apart, not for 5 minutes, not for 1 minute. it is solid throughout which is a... read

shorter, it would have been one of my favorite recent movies, but it frustrated me at some point after it established the set pieces and before it really took them to the natural conclusion. i was spoiled for the premise and interpretations, which is even worse than being spoiled for the actual plot in this case, since the signs are no longer subtle and intriguing. that being said, with a clearer idea what it would be about, the first reveal of the book was great. it was not a scary movie, but certainly an uncomfortable one to watch. the main issue preventing me from enjoying it as much as i... read

a startlingly scary horror/psychological thriller. newcomer jennifer kent has created a powerful and effective fright film that uses every tool in its capacity to keep the viewer on edge, while crafting a great story that leaves things nicely up to interpretation. essie david and noah wiseman are fantastic as a beleaguered single mother and her troubled son who encounter a terrifying creature that first appears in a children's book. what's particularly nice is that kent doesn't overdo things here. there can certainly be a tendency to go all out on your first big break, because if it falls read

this is a really, really well made horror film. it never descends into cheap jumpscares or impossible events, instead using fantastic lighting and perfectly timed cuts to build suspense in an authentic manner. essentially this is just the shining from jack torrances perspective instead of dannys, except this story is more grounded and told in a much tighter manner than the shining. essie davis performance is great, perfectly toeing the line of insanity without going over the top. the fact that this story can function on both a supernatural level and in the real world depending on your read

film 11 of obligatory october of horror y'all, it's an acronym for "a bad book" that's so clever! honestly quite let down by this. it's a decent film but as usual with massively hyped up things, it has no way to live up to the glowing reviews. if it weren't for those massive expectations (and the pretty bad ending) this would be an easy 8 but as it is i'd struggle to justify a 7. read

a very chilling film. good performances from both of the leads - although i did find the boy very irritating. the concept itself was quite scary, and was handled very well - i was very much creeped out by most of this film. however, it didn't draw me in as much as other horrors, the two main characters (although well-acted) were just a bit annoying as a whole so i found it hard to feel for them. it was an interesting watch but i don't think i'd watch it again. read

Posiblemente la mejor película de terror del año pasado.
(si hay alguna mejor recordadmelo)
La película tiene claramente dos partes diferenciadas y a cual más angustiosa.

My quick rating - 7;2/10. An exceptionally well-made flick on a shoestring budget. Everything in this movie does its job. The story is basically a yarn on "the boogeyman" tale; but this goes much further and is more personal. I must point out that this is a thinking person's horror movie that uses camera work; slight music; acting (that forgotten art) and a story to scare you. No gore needed to frighten you around the corners of the house. I suppose I should just simply state the plot: A single mother and her slightly off son live in a suburb of Australia (I think Adelaide is a suburb; I am... read

An original horror movie from the land of Oz,well acted by the mother played by Essie Davis and the child played by Noah Wiseman. The movie is well crafted and is a cut above a lot of the bland horror movies coming out lately.Has a fair amount of scares but it was the atmosphere that really draws you into this movie.Don't know where they came up with the name but take a look if you like good horror. read

Torn between writing something like "oh wow, what a compelling, tightly directed horror film, genuinely the first one in a long while to make me as scared and unsettled as it did, whilst meditating on exhaustion, both mental and physical, grief, parenthood etc. All tied together by two great lead performances" and "Holy shit, THIS is where 'Why can't you just be normal' meme template comes from?!"
Either way, I had a lot of fun watching The Babadook, it's remarkable how drip feeding a few little details about a monster can make everything from clothes hanging on a rack to the random noises a... read

In her directorial debut, Jennifer Kent produces a superb psychological horror concerning a widowed mother doing her best to raise her monster-obsessed troubled son who begins to convince her that there is a sinister entity known as the Babadook haunting their home. What is a effective portrayal of grief over a tragic loss, the Babadook is never anything less than captivating. The emotionally charged relationship between mother and son is credit to the performances of mother (Essie Davis) and son (Noah Wiseman). As we watch mother slip deeper into a trancelike state, the power of the Babadook... read
