52 years 52 weeks 52 thrillers 2014 watched this on itunes. great directorial debut from dan gilroy, who also wrote the screenplay. it's a neon-noir crime thriller satire, think of it as drive but satirizing the news industry. get p.t. anderson's longtime dp, robert elswit, to shoot jake gyllenhaal being a complete psychopath and get a guaranteed good movie. this doesn't have the highs of drive for me, nor does the soundtrack even come close, but i had fun watching this. read more

i will never ask you to do anything that i wouldnt do myself. jake gyllenhaal in this movie is basically perfect for the role, he gives me weird joker/driver vibes in how awkward he is, but his ambition and sociopathic tendencies are extremely entertaining to watch play out. watching him set up scenes to get better shots, starting with something as simple as moving photo on a fridge that had been shot to make a more dramatic image, to moving an injured body before the police show up to get a good angle. it's all entertaining. it's all thrilling. it's but a piece of the adrenaline read more

after the massive disappointment that was velvet buzzsaw, i figured i should rewatch this and figure out if maybe it wasn't that good and only carried by jakey g. and while his performance is probably the main reason why nightcrawler is so memorable, it does have good writing and a coherent plot unlike certain other films by the same director with the same lead actor. it may not be quite the sharp critique of media i saw in it when i first watched it ages ago but it's a great film with a tight script that's been able to keep my full attention twice now. and that's fairly rare, so i'd say this... read more

This film was pure brilliance. Jake as per usual blows away in this performance. It is another piece of evidence that he is an amazing actor with great range. This film made me hate his character, and him. And that's hard to do since I love him so much. But just a great performance on his part. And just a great all around idea. read more

i already find those neoliberal entrepreneur made of catchphrases types scary enough. but Lou Bloom seems to have learned how to be human from these people's self help books. it personifies neoliberalism, just exagerating it enough to make it completely terrifying. read more
