i was expecting to dislike this movie. if you have read my other kevin smith reviews you would no i don't really think he is a great director, a great writer yes, but a great director, not so much. plus the trailer for yoga hosers was released a couple of weeks back and boy did it look terrible.
well i watched this yesterday and man did i enjoy it. weierd, disturbing, funny these are just a few words to describe the film. it's a horror movie and a comedy; it's about a man who turns another man into a walrus. does that last sentence sound appealing?
our 'mad scientist' here is played brilliantly by michael parks. he was just amazing and unrelated to the movie or the man himself his performance and take on the character reminded me very much of breaking bad's walter white. parks exudes evil from the get go and only gets more so as the film gets weirder and stranger and stranger.
it's also pretty funny. it takes place in canada and i found the canadian jokes to be pretty damn funny (i live in canada) if not the most original. it also features one awesome and hilarious performance from an uncredited johnny depp. he was so funny here and he shows once again that yes he is still a contender for one of today's best actors (and he does that in this movie of all movies!).
as for kevin smith's direction. it is as good or possibly better than the writing here which is a rarity if not a first for smith. it's strong, it's assured and he really knows how to deliver the horror. he also surrounded himself with a great cinematographer, a great editor and a great composer which elevated the movie even more as all three aspects were all top notch.
before yesterday i was in no ruch to see this and even less in a rush to see yoga hosers. but since i have a kevin smith collection and since the price of the dvd came down to something affordable i a) bought it and b) watched it. i actually really liked it, i thought it was well done, it was a fun time and it was damn funny while being damn disturbing at the same time.
bring on yoga hosers!!
