Review of Nymphomaniac: Vol. I

man was i ever excited about this film (both parts actually). i missed it in theatres and have wanted to see it ever since. why? well there is the cast, there is the director and there is the sex. not just any sex but lots of hardcore real sex. yes i know, i'm a perv. sue me. i love von trier and i love gainsbourg and skarsgard and so many others in this film. i love art house films. i love sex and nudity. i figured this movie would be right up my ally. so i watched vol. 1 yesterday (these are not the director's cuts which i will watch later when i get them. they are the theatrical cuts which von trier did not edit. after careful research i came to the conclusion - as i usually watch the director's preferred version - that i would of seen these versions in the theatre so why not watch it at home. so what did i think? well i liked the film. it was funny and somewhat sad and a little erotic. it kept my attention the whole time it played (with no music) and it had beautiful cinematography which was awesome. and the sex, lots of it (but not as much as i thought) was great and sexy and sometimes erotic and sometimes not. i also thought the story was a little weak. maybe the second half will make it stronger but as a film on its own it doesn't really do or tell much. it kind of feels like a bunch of scenes put together that never go anywhere (yet). it also likens, it seems, nymphomania to fishing. maybe that's the whole idea of the film, that nymphomania is not that bad and it is as good a hobby as fishing. for such an extreme boundry pushing movie it really doesn't have much to say (yet). still, it's an enjoyable two hours and i look forward to vol. 2. production design: 8 out of 10 cinematography: 9 out of 10 re-playability: 6 out of 10 originality: 8 out of 10 costumes: 8 out of 10 directing: 8 out of 10 editing: 8 out of 10 acting: 9 out of 10 music: 8 out of 10 script: 7 out of 10 79/100
