for adults who read the book (i.e. me): 5 this is a very faithful adaptation of the book, with just one thing lost in the process. this loss is not a fault of the movie: it's the nature of the medium to present the story from the outside, and even good acting can't capture the information and, especially, the subjectivity and specificity of text. why even mention it then? because there is nothing gained: the movie is a decent watch, the special effects work, and so on, but for someone who knows what the story is about, there just isn't anything to see at all. i wasn't bored while watching,... read more

genre films tend to get a bad rap when it comes to being considered "serious cinema," but the truth is that they are often among the most effective at tackling serious themes about the human condition. science fiction has always been at the forefront of taking on social and political issues on the big screen, for example; genre allows fantastical elements to speak out as metaphor for very real, important concepts. a monster calls is a wonderful, heartbreaking example of that. patrick ness adapted his own novel to the big screen for a dark fantasy that touches on the ways people deal with loss... read more

5 un monstruo viene a verme decir la verdad, que risa. sensiblería, un niño que no para de llorar y dar gritos. una historia muy usada. lo único destacable son las historias animadas. el parecido con el laberinto del fauno es bastante evidente pero el fauno es muy superior y no juegan con el piano pesado y sin buscar la lágrima fácil. read more
