Mads 'Danish Powerhouse' Mikkelsen continues his string of spot-on performances as yet another silent tormented soul, whose face is shimmering with brutally honest emotions. The Salvation starts off as a great exploration of 1870s America and the problematic lives of its immigrants. About 15 minutes in, a mediocre scene marks the plot start for a good old redemption plot, after which the film follows a rather formulaic turn of events typical to the western genre. read more

In the US of 1870 a Danish settler uses his ex-soldier skills to avenge his family from an evil landowner. Flaunting Levring's radical departure from most of the Dogma95 rules, stylish western handles genre clichés with considerable skill and keeps dialogue to a minimum to focus on vengeful action. Spectacular South African locations, a musical score that conjures Morricone without overdoing it, and the iconic force of Mikkelsen and Green's features make this an enjoyable, but far from unforgettable, neo-postmodern smørrebrød western. read more
