it's a shame that this movie is bombing at the box office. it's also a shame that it is not getting great reviews. i thought it was great. it's no bruno or borat (cohen's best) but it's miles above the dictator. it's also hilarious and heartfelt.
telling the tale of two brothers separated at a young age where one becomes a super spy and the other a nobody the movie has it's heart on the right sleeve. it's not the most original of premisses but it works well and it's well made. plus cohen is hilarious and mark strong is his usual great self (and could potentially make a great bond?)
the humour is great and you will laugh from the moment the movie starts to the moment it finishes. some of it is chuckle worthy, some of it is laugh out loud funny and much of it is cringeworthy gross out humour that is damn funny when it is done right and this movie sure does do it right. a quick warning though, some of the scenes and jokes are really quite 'gross' and you will be cringing while trying to hold back tears.
the best thing about this movie though is how heartfelt it is. it has a real solid emotional core and backstory and it plays it really well. i was expecting the ending of the movie to have a real schmaltzy payoff, cringeworthy and not in a good way. it didn't. not in the least. it never dragged it's self into a really high bucket of over sentimentality that it couldn't crawl out of.
i had a great time watching this movie and i defy you not to.
