my feelings on this film haven't changed much at all on a second viewing. it was pretty much exactly as i remembered. hilarious at parts, damn funny at other parts, slightly overlong at times and way to conventional an ending for what wasn't such a conventional film to start.
i am not the biggest amy schumer fan. i think she's funny but not the funniest person out there and sometimes she is just crass. in this film she is a highly unlikable person. she is a drunk and drink infused moving from one person to the next and not caring who she hurts mean as biatch. so when the amazing bill hader falls for her it doesn't ring true. why would any one fall for her; she is just too mean.
bill hader is just so likeable in this film. he is awesome and he should be in every comedy ever made from now on. lebron james was amazing and deserves to be in more films (much better than michael jordan ever was). the whole side cast is amazing, colin quinn, mike birbiglia, the gorgeous brie larson, tilda swindon, john (i usually hate him) cena, everyone (even schumer despite her character) are on point.
not surprising as judd apatow always delivers when he directs. he makes films longer than they need to be but then that length affords so many laugh out loud moments you would lose if they were shorter. was the scene with marv albert and mathew broderick needed? not in the least but i wouldn't want it cut out of the film as it is too too funny.
if you take away the fact that schumer's character is not worthy of the outcome of the film, and that the outcome of the film is way to conventional and hollywood movie like when the film sets up a realistic look at people and love and you take away the overlength then you have a great rewatchable comedy that no matter how many times you watch it you will laugh out loud at many of its jokes.
not apatow's best but even apatow not at his best is better than most comedies coming out of america these days. even though i have problems with the story and schumer i still enjoyed the hell out of this, more so than i thought i would on a second watch. i'd even watch it again.
