max is perfectly acceptable but extremely by-the-numbers family entertainment. the whole thing has great intentions and the performances by the both human and canine cast are good, but the whole thing is assembled in such a bland, prepackaged manner that it's difficult to stick up for it. there are a lot of potentially-interesting elements here, but they don't meld quite right. the story of a boy coming of age while healing his family rift via a dog is solid, but when it's matched up with an left field second half about arms dealers and cartels it just doesn't match up. there's nothing else... read more
