Review of Unfriended

while showing someone's screen is not entirely new, and the idea was used more creatively and flexibly in "10,000 km", there is something to be said about keeping it simple. for the entire run time, we not only see just blaire's screen, but only see others via their webcam feed in skype, and it works. it doesn't feel gimmicky or restrictive. and it's 2015, but it's still refreshing to see representations of computer and internet usage. bonus: i haven't checked if mtv was involved with the movie, but she was watching mtv's teen wolf (edited: blaire's actress also has a role on that show) - and watching a torrented miley cirus show that would not accept being deleted; you don't just trash miley, blaire, she won't stop, she can't stop. the movie unravels at the end though. the chatroulette section made no sense, and the mounting hysteria becomes tiresome instead of tense. is it scary? no. was it fun? yes, mostly for the style. one thing though, is that i've only watched "10,000 km" and this and they come from different backgrounds, are different genres, have different ambitions and audiences, yet were instantly familiar in what they showed: the character typing quickly or slowly, when s/he hesitates, deletes, rephrases, waits; the multitasking, the browsing, music... i could just c/p bits of the other review, and of course i can. it's exactly the accuracy that dooms this formal conceit to a certain degree of uniformity: this is, after all, how we do things, what our own screens look like.
