the mummy is almost worthwhile. it's got action, thrills, great sets, comedy, stunts, an amazing car crash, zombie mummy things, sandstorms, all the things you would want in a mummy film and it all works pretty well.
and it's got tom cruise who isn't what is wrong with this film even though you might of heard so. he's fine, if a little bland character wise. it's not his best performance but cruise has charisma and it works in this film.
what doesn't is the badly written script (example: a military commander orders an evacuation as enemies are closing in and literally a minute later they are trying to escape before a sandstorm takes them out) and the world building. oh, the woe some world building,
this movie would be fine if they didn't throw it in your face that this was a universe the studio was trying to create. with narration and exposition they just keep stoping the fun movie you are watching and connecting it to something larger. it makes for an expository opening and a real dull thud of an uninteresting coda to the film.
it's bad. it's badly done. it's a drawback to the film. you just don't care about it. i know i would rather watch a great mummy movie and then say a great frankenstein movie a year later that either a) holy shit! blows my mind when it connects to the mummy or b) uses a continuing character/characters to show it is shared. then you can start building a universe.
when you do it the way universal is trying with this film you both make for a turkey of a movie and you make a lukewarm reception to a universe that has promise but so far it seems squandered.
case in point: 2017's the mummy
