Review of Beasts of No Nation

you will think that i am some sort of beast or devil. i am all of these things but i also having mother father brother and sister once. they loved me. there were moments in cary fukunaga's beasts of no nation where i was reminded of apocalypse now. through a sort of bleak and hallucinatory type of imagery, the film is able to conjure up some of the feelings of madness and insanity that apocalypse now is able to conjure up. perhaps the greatest triumph of this film is that it recognizes that the use of child soldiers in these conflicts isn't just a brutal and depressing topic, but it is a manifestation of insanity and madness. yet, it is very clear that what makes this film so effective in its aims is how technically proficient it is in every aspect of the film. the direction is sharp and beautiful but is still able to feel visceral and haunting at the same time. the actors give such towering performances throughout the film. abraham attah is able to conjure up an almost perfect manifestation of childhood swept up in the insanity and madness of war, while idris elba creates a powerful presence as the commandant of the battalion. the cinematography was beautiful and the script did a nice job establishing a world before destroying it by putting it through the rigors of war. all of these elements are excellent and are why the film is largely successful. the create a hunting and harrowing experience that many films attempt to capture but few do. while some of these elements also lead to a seeming austere nature to the film that seems out of place at times, they also work very well together for the most part. the film doesn't play as shocking as it wants to be though. perhaps it is because we have been desensitized as an audience to this type of violence on screen. perhaps the more haunting and, honestly, more philosophical and sociological sides of the film are just more powerful. the film is, at times, just as interested in how this phenomenon comes about as it is in creating the feelings that come along with the brutality of war. if anything, i think that these two components of the film clash a bit and don't work as great together as one would think that they do nevertheless, this film is beautiful, harrowing and haunting, if not very shocking. this is not an easy film for some to endure because of the subject matter but it is a very rewarding experience to sit through. and there is plenty of talent and craft to admire throughout this film. in some ways, it is a shame that this is just a netflix release. this would be a much better experience on the big screen where the visuals would really pop. i suspect that a viewing of this film would be much different in a theater than it is on the couch at home.
