it was like old faithful. it was everywhere. like the garbage truck had to come lay salt to get rid of it top five maybe top five in director chris rock's film work, in terms of how funny it is. the laughs here come flying at you fast and furious and most of them work really well. chris rock is definitely at the top of his game when he was writing the material for this film. with the help of some excellent cameos and work from some of his friends, top five had me laughing more than most comedies do these days.
i just wish that it took it a little farther, in terms of narrative and thematic material. he clearly has something to say about being taken seriously and being type cast. he clearly has something to say about addiction and drug use that comes with fame. but, unfortunately, he can only muster some surface level observations about these things and never really explores the territory that it seems like he wanted to travel to with this film. the script, aside from the comedic elements, just seems like a mess and could use a little tightening up.
the comedy here does overcome it, generally. there are some really funny scenes and observational humor, as only chris rock can do, but the film does tend to drag some when it is trying to pick at these larger issues but doesn't really go anywhere with it. it just isn't as poignant or engaging on that level as a film like this needs to be.
but, still, this is a pure and passionate project from one of the funniest comics of recent times. if you even appreciate his humor a little bit, you will find a lot to like about this movie. if you don't like his humor very much, there really isn't much to engage you surrounding that.
