Review of The Town that Dreaded Sundown

much better than i expected. pointedly meta, a sequel in a world where the events in the first movie became a movie that is watched in town every year, and watched by the lead investigator, and there is a copycat killer. it's very "scream sequels", with the victim crawling underneath the screen where the movie is projected, and uses the copycat conceit very well, mixing old footage with the current events in various, seamless ways. there is an old school slasher focus on investigation, from both the police and the lead character, and on the town itself, a morally corrupt, festering group, with a reverend that thinks the killer does god's work because more people are attending his church and an elite that parties while people are dying (as in hertzog's nosferatu, where the rats is a police car). the movie looked good, with confident directing and a tad too many editing gimmicks (for example, the ones used while she is doing her research in the archives), which i thought was not as bothersome given the by-the-numbers execution of other modern horrors i've seen lately.
