i loved the cast of this film. all of them are under the radar of hollywood except for bryan cranston, hellen mirren and dianne lane's case. these actors should be cast for more hollywood projects. i just love how this film turns out to be, and how accurate it is to the real-life story of dalton trumbo. read

for a film about a writer who penned some of the greatest scripts of all time, trumbo suffers from a script that doesn't know what tone it wants to strike and a script that is, honestly, kind of boring and on the nose. this is a film that strives to be a moving drama and a funny comedy at the same time, it manages to never be as funny as it thinks it is or as deep and moving as it wants to be. everything about this film is very surface level to the point where the artificiality of it drowns out the deeper currents of interesting ideas that could have made the film much better if the script... read

quick hit: trumbo is a stolid biopic that fits blacklisted hollywood screenwriter dalton trumbo's experience into the typical beats of a film biopic. bryan cranston sparkles as the ornery trumbo and the rest of the cast is quite good as well. the story feels like it would have been a better fit as an hbo film -- fitting, as director jay roach did game change. it's very decently made but is just a little too by-the-numbers to be great. read
