somewhat unnecessarily-grotesque humanoid gore aside, this was an impressively-rendered post-apocalyptic steampunk swordfighting kaiju movie of sorts, that portrays the ragged resilience of the human spirit against unassailable monstrous forces and personal tragedies. i really liked the character development in the beginning, which explain the psyches of the lead trio, and the lasting impact of fateful tragedies on their friendship. it is poignant that the centuries-old thick towering walls that are erected in defense, ultimately cage. read
