i am watching the masters of horror series for a second time in my life. so far i have watched around 70% of the episodes and shockingly most are better than i remember and/or many i didn't remember at all.
pro-life, directed by one of my most favourite of directors john carpenter, is an episode that i had hated before. this time around i expected to, like many of the other episodes, appreciate it more and actually like it. well, i didn't. in fact, i can unequivocally say that this is the worst episode of the series so far and the worst film carpenter has ever made.
what makes it so bad? well the script sucks. when a doctor performs an ultrasound on a pregnant lady and the stomach folds in and grabs the ultrasound tool and breaks it and the doctor doesn't think anything is wrong is one such example of the bad script. another is when a character says 'i'm not going to kill you. i've got something better planned.' and then ends up slowly killing that person (when he is in a hurry no less) you know the script is just bad.
the acting sucks too. other than ron pearlman, his sons and the lead doctor (who isn't that great) everyone sucks here. the acting is wooden, the dialogue forced and no one other than who i mentioned comes off as anything close to convincing. it feels like early 80's canadian television.
the music by cody carpenter is no good either, which is a shame ashis music for cigarette burns was fantastic and very reminiscent of his dad's classic scores. the effects looked cheap and fake. the spider baby thing looked like a doll with crab legs.
and the biggest sin of this movie is that the cinematography was bad. i've seem worse but this is a john carpenter flick and that man is a master when it comes to gorgeous cinematography. here the film looks weak, sometimes amateurish and just plain bad.
look, there are a few things that work in this film and it's not complete garbage but it sure as hell ain't any good. it's a shame that my favourite director has made the worst (so far) episode of this show, it really is.
