plot is total nonsense. tries to have twists, but they don't make sense, so they don't work. effects, gore, costumes, stunts, acting, are mostly very good. which is such a shame considering what it's in service of. i blame the screenwriter seth m. sherwood. a couple of nice visual homages. a handful of laugh-out-loud moments but not enough to warrant a viewing for the badness/silliness alone. disappointing. spoilers: one change that would have made me like the movie a bit better, enough for 5/10 at-least, is if they would have had bud become leatherface, instead of jackson. now, you can still... read more

43 years after making horror movie history, Tobe Hooper's "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" has stood the test of time and survived as a cult item in spite of a flurry of mediocre sequels, prequels, and whatnot. Going back to the grubby look of the original, "Leatherface" offers an alternate take on how the iconic title character came to earn his mask and his nickname and, in spite of a semi-clever final twist, it once again proves that the less we know about a character's past the better it is. This origin story of how Leatherface came to be is pretty crap. I thought maybe the inclusion of a couple of decent actors in Stephen Dorff and Lili Taylor might make it worth watching but no. I don't know if Tobe Hooper got to see the finished product before his passing but if not he would be rolling in his grave at this tripe.
