i'm a massive fan of danish director nicolas winding refn's work. drive is one of my absolute favorite movies, and bronson is completely fantastic. i've seen most of his stuff, including valhalla rising, only god forgives and a couple of the pusher movies. even when i strongly dislike one of his movies (i.e. only god forgives) it's still an interesting experience and one worth discussing with other movie nerds. i feel like this is where the neon demon is at. it's never more than the sum of it's parts, but holy hell what parts it has. the one aspect of refn's films that never fails to grab me... read more

film 3 of obligatory october of horror ii jumpscare counter: 1 this feels like the culmination of modern refn. visually stunning, solid atmosphere, kind of pretentious, very lacking in story. i found that okay with only god forgives but this time it just left me entirely cold. it's one of those cases where the ending happened and i just sat here going "oh. alright." which is generally a bad sign. still, it's well-made from a technical standpoint and i enjoyed its vibe but as a whole it just didn't quite work for me. read more

I don't know how I feel about this film ultimately. I was wanting to see it for some time but it was not what I originally expected it to be.  It's an immensely artsy film. With some absolutely gorgeous scenes that can take your breath away. The soundtrack is a fantastic partner to that.  But where this films fails is its nearly unbearable slow burn. The build up was to big for a mediocre finale. It was just lacking. My quick rating - 5;1/10. Highly rated movie on IMDb that deserves kudos for all the technical stuff that goes into making a film. Excellent camera work; lighting; etc. All the good stuff you take out of film school; and then usually lose when you make it to Hollywood. As of yet; the is something that has not happened to Nicolas Winding Refn quite yet. Although I would like to see a quality story to go with it. I'm a big fan of director Nicolas Winding Refn but this one is definitely not his best. It was interesting that to some part this would be a true indication of what happens to girls trying to get into the fashion industry. What is different in this is the horror aspect which involves necrophilia, cannibalism and other sordid acts its pretty rough on most moviegoers. As a visual piece its great and Elle Fanning is also good as the main character. Definitely not for everyone. read more
