88 is a fun mindbender of a revenge flick buried in a very, very messy story structure. katherine isabelle is phenomenal as gwen/flamingo, a girl who ends up in a fugue state with split personalities after a traumatic incident involving the death of an exotic dancer and the murder of gwen's boyfriend. isabelle is the kind of actress who can give this sort of over-the-top concept and character a believable spin, and she anchors the film impressively.
the unfortunate thing about 88 is that tim doiron's screenplay (based on a story by doiron and director april mullen) isn't able to stitch the whole thing together as slickly as they think. many have described 88 as a sort of memento by way of quentin tarantino, and that's an apt comparison. however, mullen and doiron are not tarantino and they have some problems with coherency here. the direction is stylish and solid and the performances by christopher lloyd, doiron himself, jesse mccartney and others are quite decent. there was a great idea here and it's great fun, especially when it lets isabelle cut loose. however, that doesn't elevate it to the level of a great film.
