the wolfpack tells a unique story about a group of kids who were raised with little contact with the world outside of their apartment and relied on each other and movies for their socialization. this documentary is a sometimes compelling but surface level exploration of this unique situation. rarely probing for any deeper meaning or reasoning beyond what is on the surface, the tale of these kids is still fascinating to watch and to discover.
the level of meaning that cinema and movies takes in these kids lives and the way that it stands in for many experiences that everyone has in life gives way to many ideas that are worth exploring. what consequences does this dependence have? how did it change their worldview? alas, the wolfpack never really delves into these types of questions. the film also stays away from the father and what he might have to say about these kids lives, even though the father is a critical and crucial figure in the story. somehow, the film seems incomplete without more attention given to his ideas and viewpoint.
yet, these kids do go through an emotional and character driven arch that is as compelling as some that you would find in a narrative feature. i certainly felt like i was going on a journey with these kids. unfortunately, i'm not sure the film maximized the story that it had at its fingertips. the subject matter alone will make it worth watching, but some of the choices in the film make it less transcendent of a story than it probably should be.
