film #19 of hooptober the 6th: the producers cut
many people have proven that you dont need to have a big budget or studio backing to make a great horror film. in fact, those can very arguably be a detriment. most of the best horror out there have come from outside of the big studios, even if they were eventually brought in through sequels, distribution needs or the like. but jeremy saulnier, coralie fargeat, mike flanagan, ti west, adam wingarde, and takashi miike are just a few recent to semi-recent examples of directors who have created fantastic, often terrifying tales on film without the benefit of a major hollywood budget.
that said, its important to remember that for every good indie horror film, there are a whole host of bad ones. and among the last couple of years, the church is really close to the nadir, if not actually there. i dont know what the budget for this cheap, ugly, poorly-acted film was, but i cant imagine it was even a marginal number. beyond the name value of bill moseley as the preacher pressured to sell his church, theres nothing to suggest that any money was brought to bear – or at least that it had value.
theres plenty to go off on here. the acting is amateurish, the plot is dull, the deaths uncreative and the dialogue is coma-inducing. the less i say about the hilariously-bad cgi the better; ill just point out that i could probably do better with that i have on my cheap little home computer. but the biggest sin the church has is just how boring it is. its objectively probably a better film than a night to dismember, but its not as entertaining as that disaster. when the church was done, i found myself not amused, not impressed -- not even amazed at how bad it was. i simply found myself annoyed that i had wasted 80 minutes of my life on it.
