45 years is a haunting meditation on the ways in which the past, especially past relationships, can reframe one's perception of someone that can threaten a marriage in real ways. it understands the emotional complexities that come along with that and the deep ramifications that these complexities can have on how we experience life and the relationships that we form in our lives. yet, it also understands that this is a very complex and complicated situation that has no clear right answers or judgements that are clearly right or wrong. within the context of the narrative, the film provides a stunning and emotionally powerful ending that leaves room for multiple interpretations and, intelligently, does not prioritize one over any other one. this is sticky and thickly complicated moral grounds and the film does right to not cast any moral judgements while exploring the intricacies of this relationship and how its changing.
it is a very subtle film too. it derives its power from small subtle things that, perhaps, would have gotten lost in the hands of another director. andrew haigh pays very careful attention to the details of these characters lives and utilizes these details to illuminate the ways that the past is affecting and threatening their relationships. the story is about a married couple coming up on their 45th anniversary who receive news relating to an old relationship that one of the characters had a long time ago. while there are conversations about it, haigh derives the most punch from the small ways that this impacts their lives and the great meaning that these characters attach to these small details. the camera focuses on the complex emotions running through the characters faces as this old relationship affects small things such as smoking habits and the schedule for going on walks.we see how much the characters are connected by the intimacy of these small rituals and we see how much meaning they attach to these small rituals.
and it is a credit to how good the acting is in this film. both charlotte rampling and tom courtenay have to convey these emotions and meanings without saying much and through subtle body language clues and they are both very effective at it. these feel like real characters that are dealing with this situation and a lot of the film's successes rely on their solid performances and the chemistry between them. they feel like a couple that has been together for many years and that is critical to the success of this story.
this film finds some interesting ground that isn't often explored in films about troubled marriages. often, we see the trouble that is bubbling underneath an otherwise happy marriage. that isn't quite the same ground that this film is treading within. by all accounts, this seems to be a very happy and successful marriage. yet, the past still finds a way to creep into the relationship and change how each of the characters views the other one. something that, on its surface, shouldn't be a big deal can have seismic consequences in ways that are almost not logical. there is a lot of material here that will provoke deep thought about the nature of relationships and the perceptions of other people that we build those relationships on.
but, do not underestimate the emotional power of this film. it is heartbreaking and painful to watch these characters deal with the ramifications of the past and their new perceptions of their long time partners. it is a searingly powerful journey that is effective no matter what interpretation that you may have of the ending. it works so well in dissecting this relationship and the actors are so good at selling their parts that you can't help but feel for these characters and what they are going through.
this is a film that probably doesn't get enough praise for what it is. this is a powerful, deep, and searing depiction of a long term marriage and two people who are struggling to come to terms with the distant past and their respective life trajectories.
