such a shame. i can't say i had high hopes but i did have some hope that this would be good. visually it's beautiful and fairly faithful to the 1995 anime. there's numerous shots that are a perfect recreation of the originals but they just made it even more apparent that i was watching a lesser movie. scarlett johansson was on good form and clearly put a lot of effort in but sadly it was got naught read

i didn't think this was bad and seeing a live-action adaptation of a 90's cyberpunk anime in the theater feels like i jumped into some kinda alternate timeline universe where someone made a period piece about a reality that never was anddddd that's sorta cool? is cyberpunk back??? anyway there's really no reason for this to exist aside from oh yeah no one wants to give money to 2d animation (let alone re-release something that still holds up) even though as opposed to cg graphics: it never ages. visuals aside it's a ghost-less copy of the original, that in a mind-boggling move added an actual... read

Sciencey opening and a city with a slightly dystopian cyberpunk vibe akin to The 5th Element and Blade Runner. This is beautifully presented as are most of the CGI effects despite a few glitches. Scarlett reprises her role as Black Widow and Lucy, fighting her way physically and also emotionally in the search for who Major is. The plot is a little frayed, but most of the dialogue holds up, although Danustia Samal's choice to exaggerate her British accent is bizarre and grating.
