i had different expectations and interests when i started watching this, and i didn't make it very far; namely, i thought it would be more of documentary but it started as a biopic. there is a reason why when we are shown the last sprint, it doesn't start the minute before that. i did not care that the doctor was a brilliant, eccentric artist, i did not care about his differences of methodology and opinion (not the way they were shown, with no connection to the subject matter; is it even relevant? would a more conventional doctor not have discovered the same thing in the same situation? or... read more

for a movie about a condition that has such major implications on a person's life, concussion feels like a very low stakes movie where not much is at risk. it is also curiously low stakes considering the trials and tribulations that the film thinks that the main character is going through. the film never gets going and never lands with the impact that it should land with because it isn't able to convince us that the main character is actually making a sacrifice or risking anything personally, except for his pride in his work and his ways. the film turns into an awareness piece that lacks the... read more

quick hit: will smith leads a cast full of great performances in this real-life sports drama that plays it a bit safe and gets overly sincere once or twice, but is well worth watching. the drama works because it feels real; nothing is played for pointlessly-heightened melodrama and the cinematography and score are gorgeous. this won't be remembered as one of smith's absolute best works but it's a very well-made film that contains as much heart as it does intelligence. read more

I am not a big fan of Will Smith and he has certainly done some bad movies of late but in this he is at the top of his game. Playing the real life Dr Bennett Omalu, Will Smith puts everything into his portrayal. The doctor is known for bringing the attention of the world to head injuries that can be caused by the contact sport of American Football. I don't know much about the game itself but the film is certainly good for anyone who loves sports movies. Maybe it wont get him an Oscar but he deserves to be nominated at least. read more
