unrated cut watched.
suitably fine moment-to-moment, but i'm not a huge fan of director ronny yu's way of shooting these fight scenes. they're too hyper kinetic. jet li is no slouch when it comes to belting out some wicked fight choreography- but it's like the camera is never still enough to let us appreciate these fights by themselves. it's always doing so much extra shit- twisting, tilting, whipping around, and zooming in.
the effect backfires. instead of making the fights seem more intense, it actually obscures the otherwise excellent choreography. it knocks fearless down a peg which is unfortunate because it has so much potential, and even its other elements are similarly hampered. i found the core redemption arc compelling in a few scenes, jet li was really applying himself here, dramatically.
yet, there's a disconnect between the different acts of the story. too long spent on one thing, not enough on another; some aspects feel rushed, and others feel like they're moving at a snail's pace. it makes for a feeling of whiplash, and undermines whatever thematic momentum and emotional consistency they might have had otherwise. which is a shame, again, because this could've been an amazing epic- bordering on true greatness.
this could have been the standard for a movie like ip man to try and reach, but instead, fearless fumbles most of its grand dramatic aspirations, while ip man stuck its landing with gusto. if i'm ever struck with the urge to watch this movie again, i'll probably try the director's cut. i've heard it's about 40 minutes longer, and its mostly character stuff. that's fine by me so long as those 40 minutes go to the right places, it could actually do wonders for this movie. maybe there really is a truly great epic just waiting for me to watch it- and on the same blu-ray disc no less. fancy that.
