Very good sci-fi movie but at the same time conceptually flawed.
It is based on the Ted Chiang novel The Story Of Your Life.
The biggest issue with the movie is the fact it's more sci-fantasy than sci-fi. It has an original concept, but it's just not plausible, and this comes as a problem since the whole atmosphere of the movie is of hard sci-fi not some fantasy-esque thing.
Yet, despite of its many flaws, it can still be a very poignant and touching movie. And worth rewatching.

Things I didn't like:
- It just doesn't make sense for a language system to time travel and cause someone to have visions. Just not possible!
- Doesn't make sense the conversations happen inside the aliens spaceship, causing a security threat.
- Doesn't make sense they don't include a cryptographer and biologist in the team.
- Doesn't make sense they don't use the same approach as in the Pioneer and Voyager plaques for communication. At the very least try or mention them.
- Doesn't make sense they don't try using images for learning each other's language.
- Doesn't make sense that whole explanation about "understanding what is a question" or the "concept of you". It's just not reasonable an intelligent species doesn't know what a question is or doesn't know what a "you" is (doesn't matter if individual or collective).
- Not really believable that a few rogue military would attempt or even be able to blow things up.
- Minor issue but, they could have / should have name dropped dark energy/ matter when talking about the spacecraft propulsion.

Things I liked:
- The movie cinematography
- The soundtrack
- The artistic style of the alien spacecraft
- The fact it has its own unique personality stemmed from Chinese culture influence/mindset; you can see it in the importance of unity, and the concept of language.
- The originality of the idea of a semasiographic language using a nonlinear orthography, in which the writing conveys meaning without representing sound, thus bringing independence of time, and having no sense of direction. In essence it's a picture.
- The fact they show (predicted?) the power of independent "media" in fueling FUD (fear, uncertainty, doubt), exemplified by the internet speaker inciting to violence.

Louise Banks: Mom, please don't bother with that channel, how many times do I have to tell you those people are idiots.

Ian Donnelly: [reading from a book by Louise Banks] "Language is the foundation of civilization. It is the glue that holds a people together. It is the first weapon drawn in a conflict."

Col. Weber: Everything you do here, I have to explain to a room full of men, whose first and last question is how can this be used against us. So you'll have to give me more than that!
Dr. Louise Banks: Kangaroo.
Col. Weber: What is that?
Dr. Louise Banks: In 1770, Captain James Cook's ship ran aground off the coast of Australia and led a party, where they found the aboriginal people. One of the sailors pointed to the animals that hop around and put their babies in their pouch, And he asked what they were. The Aborigines said "kangaroo".
Col. Weber: And your point is?
Dr. Louise Banks: It wasn't until later that they learned that "kangaroo" means "I don't understand". So...I need this so that we don't misinterpret things in there, otherwise it is going to take 10 times as long.
Col. Weber: I can sell that for now. But I need you to submit your vocabulary of words before the next session. Remember what happened to the Aborigines. A more advanced race, nearly wiped them out.[Col. Weber leaves]
Ian Donnelly: It's a good story.
Dr. Louise Banks: Thanks. It's not true, but it proves my point.

Col. Weber: Remember what happened to the Aborigines. A more advanced race, nearly wiped them out.

Louise Banks: [facing the aliens] So, what are we gonna call them?
Ian Donnelly: I don't know. I was thinking Abbott and Costello.

Ian Donnelly: I was doing some reading about this idea that if you immerse yourself into a foreign language, that you can actually rewire your brain.
Louise Banks: Yeah, the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis. It's the theory that the language you speak determines how you think and...
Ian Donnelly: Yeah, it affects how you see everything. ... I'm curious, are you dreaming in their language?

Agent Halpern: We have to consider the idea that our visitors are prodding us to fight among ourselves until only one faction prevails.
Louise Banks: There's no evidence of that.
Agent Halpern: Sure there is. Just grab a history book. The British with India, the German with Rwanda... They even got a name for it in Hungary.

Louise Banks: [narrating] So, Hannah... This is where your story begins. The day they departed. Despite knowing the journey... and where it leads... I embrace it. And I welcome every moment of it.

Ian Donnelly: You know I've had my head tilted up to the stars for as long as I can remember. You know what surprised me the most? It wasn't meeting them. It was meeting you.
[they hug]
Louise Banks: I forgot how good it felt to be held by you.
Ian Donnelly: You wanna make a baby?
Louise Banks: Yes. Yeah.

Erg goed! Mooi gelaagd verhaal, prachtige blik op taal en communicatie. Ook het doel en de uitvoering van de aliens sprak me erg aan. Geeft
