When you see Tim Burton's name on the poster, you can't help but expect something special. Some unique vision, some unique Gothic aftertaste... In other words, you expect a movie with the impact. Unfortunately, that's just not the case with Dumbo. Like his previous movie (Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, which was based on the novel of the same name), Dumbo just doesn't have it. That special something that makes you want to return to it again and again. Sure, it's an OK family movie and Dumbo is pretty cute. So, if you're looking for something to watch with the family this weekend, this one is pretty much a no-brainer. The problem is - like I said, there's nothing special about it. There's father, there are kids, there's a cute elephant and there's a bad guy. Who's... you know... BAD. The end. Nothing else in between. Sure, you can say that about pretty much every family movie. But there's always something special. Otherwise, you won't even remember about the movie a few days later. With Dumbo, you can pretty much see the entire movie in your head without even seeing it. Tim tried to add his special something, but all in all, there's just not enough. I mean, in this movie we'll have some "freaks" and the entire second half will take place in the steampunk-like environment, but there's still nothing special to get your attention. I mean, come on! Who cares if the amusement park has steampunk-like design? It's just a background, while everything else is still generic as heck! Even the acting is pretty meh this time. I mean, come on! Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito and Eva Green! Tim's good ol' stars! It MUST be special, right? Nope. Directing feels pretty lazy here and there's literally not a single scene that shows us some special acting skills. So... yeah... Don't think "Tim Burton's Dumbo" here. Think "yet another animation-comes-to live movie". Some lame attempts to add something from Tim just can't save the fact that it's the most generic movie you can find this month. Again, pretty cute as a family movie, but the original Dumbo deserved something better. WAY better.
P.S. 3D is a gimmick and not worth paying extra. The movie just doesn't have scenes that can make it worth it.
P.P.S. No after credits scene in case if you wonder. You can leave right away.
