sparse, excellently composed, with very deliberate editing, it creates a striking contrast between the sea and the austerity and drabness of human life. whether static long shots - at times of literally nothing happening (that shot of evening sky was so long i thought the movie was paused) - or quicker cuts that "leaf through" daily rhythm, the flow of the movie is intensely directed - despite the intimacy and rawness of what is shown, the pervasiveness of style dissipates any sense of realism. i thought it excellent.
the acting is tremendous; or rather the director gets tremendous results from the actors, from their silences, their subdued reactions, their very appearances. a story told partially through framing. it's not all mise-en-scene though: in close ups, the leads are very expressive and, in the absence of words, their performances carry a lot of the movie. still, this is overwhelmingly a director's movie.
notes:
* why haven't i watched innocence yet? i've had it for years. this has to change.
* it competes with the witch for this year's most jaw-droppingly picturesque.
* it's only 80 minutes. this movie does not fuck around.
* when i tell people i like movies, this! this is what i mean.
