matthew mcconaughey gives a quality performance, but the film itself is unexceptional. everything about the film is well executed to tell a classic rise and fall story, but nothing stands out. the story is a common one, and the characters aren't endearing enough to rise above commonplace material. that said, it still is an enjoyable watch. read more
