i like parodies. i always have. watching this was never in doubt, but i wasn't all that optimistic either due to the trend of noxious deluge of low-blow, lowbrow stuff excreted by friedberg-seltzer. nothing indicated that popstar would be bad per se, but i expected it to go for the easy target of justin bieber to a point where it's less of a movie than a succession of referential gags. not so. popstar is indeed an actual movie. it's not over the top either, and the characters are not surreal caricatures. the price it pays for this is that it's not a cascade of laughs. and that's ok: it read more

i laughed really hard sporadically for the first hour. fun characters and quick quips moved the story along nicely in a very funny manner. the last 30 lose quite a bit of steam though, as the story slows and the laughs-per-minute drops significantly. overall, the first hour definitely warrants a watch if you like this kind of thing. read more
