with stronger direction and a more forward-moving plot, slice could've been a legitimately great horror-comedy. as is, it's an amusing diversion- a collection of disparate elements that never truly 'click', despite being entertaining on their own merits. the werewolf who used to deliver chinese food. the pizza joint that's perhaps built on a portal to hell. the town full of ghosts. et cetera.
these are all fun ideas- albeit ones that never find any common ground with each other. having fast food delivery as a central element in a horror-comedy is a stroke of genius. doing nothing significant with that element, is just sad. there are scenes that work so damn well, and ones that fall super flat. in some ways, aesthetic ways, slice reminds me of the ghostbusters remake- only a lot funnier.
it's energetic, colorful, and everyone's clearly having a good time- which translates well to the screen. the movie is nothing if not creative, and i seriously enjoyed it. the cast is fantastic, there's some genuine laughs to be had, i love the visuals- they're gorgeous, and all that is enough for me to give slice a solid three stars. the movie is ultimately a mess, but for me- it was a blast.
