this is one of the rare cases when watching with an audience changed my outlook on the movie halfway through. i was interested in a war movie from the perspective of a nation that isn't relentlessly associated with it, a movie free from the need to make a statement; i was expecting some insight. after an excellent beginning, the structure of the movie is revealed, and with it what was its downfall for me. the entire movie alternates between the father in afghanistan and the family back home, then the father in court and family scenes. this, however, does not tell the whole story. i wish it... read more

a war is one of those films where it doesn't hook you until everything comes together in the last act of the film. i wasn't really on board with this film in the first half because where i thought it was going was just not a very interesting place. but, it turned out that the film was setting up a different kind of story. one which is far more rewarding and enthralling than i thought it was going to be. this film tells the story of a dutch military commander who is stationed in afghanistan. running parallel to that story, the film tells the story of their family back home and their struggles... read more
