why does hollywood always make garbage out of awesome asian movies/manga and anime. just turn it off and watch the original first! read

netflix's adaptation of the manga/anime series death note is often terrible but occasionally entertaining, albeit often for the wrong reasons. director adam wingarde provides a live-action take on the story of a young man with a book that will kill anyone whose name is written inside, but the results are likely far below what the fans hoped for. part of the problem is that the characters in this film are hilariously two-dimensional, something that not even fairly talented actors can overcome. no one has more development than can be told in a single sentence. the story is an interesting read

for some reason, a story that originally ran in a manga magazine aimed at japanese children has been watered down and cut up/filled with gore to hold the attention of an american adult audience. quite the insult to the original. read

the main problem of death note is not how much it deviates from the original source. i watched the anime and yes, i think it's a legitimately entertaining experience, and yes, i think it's very easy to adapt. but if this version wants to bring a new focus to the premise then let it try. such a lax idea -a character who is given the power to kill and decides to apply his own sense of justice- can have many interpretations and none of them has to be inherently worse. but this film doesn't really do that. i would have praised it if it succeeded at doing something different with its premise but... read

artificial as fuck but somehow works in its favor if you can roll with it. the characters are cartoonishly simple and nothing is given the time to feel real, assuming everyone has experienced the source material in some form or other. which makes this whole endeavour feel very "why bother now?" but i'm kind of amused at the novelty of doing it anyway. like wingard i'm not too sure about but the guy knows how to turn in a gaudy comic book movie that feels distinct. even if that comic book is all about static, talking head games and this adaptation feels mostly like a mix of final destination... read

except for the hornification of death note it was made for me specifically. if you have gripe about it not being japanese there are japanese live action films already. it makes a lot of sense for ryuuk to drop the book in america of all places. like he only does that cause hes bored ...and willem dafoe??? yeah the effects are bad but who else could play him for an american version be honest read

it's just as bad as people say it is. the standard shitty american take on foreign ip that misses everything that makes the original work. adds some really unnecessary edginess and gore and really, really fucks up the characters. i don't think anyone could argue with the fact that the two main characters of death note are one of the biggest reasons why the manga and anime worked. light being the completely misguided god of a new world that everyone desires, adhering to some weird morals he comes up with. in this film, he is an overly smug nerd whose first use of the notebook is prompted by... read

I knew this was gonna be bad, I knew that I wouldn't like it, but here I am afterwards just hating everything about it.
Not even DaFoe can save this, it's just crap. Light sucks, L sucks, everyone is a shell of their actual character. Trying to get the depth of Death Note's story into 1 movie is just such a mistake.
I am willing to give the Duffer Bros a chance on their TV adaptation, but this movie is just real bad. read

One of the better anime adaptions i´d say. It understands, that it can never hold up to the anime, so it had to become.... something else. read

My quick rating - 3;2/10. Try as I could; it was hard not to compare this to the source material. But taking that out of the equation; this really just wasn't very good. The concept is very solid; but it has been for over a decade; and has been done better. The actors in this do a really poor job; aside from the spot on perfect voice for Ryuk. Willem Dafoe is always money in the bank; but considering his CGI presence and infrequent usage; that won't help this mess. The whole movie seemed to take the source; and incorporate all the news of bullying; political unrest; etc. and wrap it all up in... read

It's unfortunately not uncommon in anime to see low-ambition projects that serve as little more than fanservice and exploitation vehicles. Death Note is not one of them, but the translation overseas has firmly shoehorned the material into that sphere of low-rent, late night programming: the characters don't matter, motivations are detached from the actions of the protagonists and any reason to watch the show is gone except for that tepid, screentime-padding constant: fanservice. And in the west, we do have our own kinds of fanservice- the stereotypical teen horror flick, replete with lazy read
