bland, forgettable, inoffensive, well-intentioned, and generic. this is a perfect example of an average film. it has a baseline competence across the board and a nice little story, but it is eminently forgettable and by the time the credits rolled it was already slipping out of my memory. when i saw stephen fry's name in the credits i was reminded that he was in the film because i had already completely forgotten.
dev patel and jeremy irons are completely fine and toby jones is delightful (good-natured toby jones is a wonderful character that we need more of). it does a decent job making the obscure mathematical concepts accessible and crafts a mildly compelling narrative that just isn't exceptional in any way.
i don't know if this was really intentional (i suspect not), but they didn't really make ramanujan a sympathetic character. he was arrogant and argumentative, which made it a little harder to sympathize with him when he was treated unfairly. being asked to prove his equations was not an unreasonable request, particularly once one was disproven, but he seemed to treat it as an impossible burden on his genius.
watched as part of scavenger hunt 49task #12: go to the cinematographer listed for movie #11 and find another movie shot by that person!my list | ryan's master list
