i watched this immediately after i watched chris rock's new special. i didn't know it was two to three years old when i watched it but it was kind of the same story as rock for me. i hadn't seen this guy since college but i remember playing "these are jokes" on loop in my car.
demetri martin has a very different style than rock or the other comedians i mentioned in that review. martin is the punchline machine and never gets personal. his style is reminiscent of a mixture of young seinfeld and mitch hedberg. joke after joke with little to no setup but oddly relatable. he makes the mundane hilarious while all the while you turn to your friends saying "holy crap, that's so true!"
while some might call this style surface level, i call it a much-needed break from the dark brood of other comics. martin is the type of comic who will pop into your head when you're at the grocery store, gas station, or just sitting at home and he makes the mundane surprising.
