junun thrives on the power of its music. the film is about the music and the emotion and energy that comes from it. it's about fostering that deep connection with harmonious sounds that seems so integral to human nature. paul thomas anderson understands this and that is what makes this film feel so vibrant, alive and vital in ways that most other music documentaries fail to do. it is also what makes this film such an entrancing and deep experience in ways that other documentaries rarely are.
anderson takes a detached approach to documenting these musical performances. he allows the power of the film to be derived from the music itself, rather than the cinematic techniques that he is known for. yet, despite being detached, the film still feels vibrant because of how in tune with the music the film is. the camera weaves, flies, and swings around the room, as if magically capturing the essence and emotion of each of the songs.
the film also has a deep respect for music. it allows each of the musical pieces to play out in full, capturing the experience of each song. but, it also allows each of the pieces to breathe as well. it allows a few seconds before and after each performance, as to not rush the viewer off to the next big thing but to all him to soak in the experience and reflect on the musical energy still in the air.
and there is something primal about this film. something about it captures the deep connection of the human experience to music. it is able to capture that vibe by using a format that it isn't usually captured in. while perhaps not fully formed as a narrative film, it is powerful enough to stand on its own. well worth seeking out this film.
