Doom

most of the movie is just guys running down nondescript corridors, killing/getting killed by monsters. i guess that's close enough to what doom is actually about? anyway, the last half hour has karl urban going first-person shooter, then facing off against the rock in super zombie mode. so i can't hate it too much. read more

i'm here for the rock over-articulating all his lines as he chews enough scenery to make a mortal man choke to death. doom is the kind of ill-advised aliens knock off you thought hollywood would've stopped making in the late 90's, but with the kind of budget they never had. this is a mostly slick production, even if it's oft misguided. there's parts of the movie that really work for me, like how instead of a romantic angle being at the core of the plot, it's actually estranged siblings. or how the movie essentially introduces a zombie/mutant virus that chooses who to infect. there's a valiant... read more
