Soul touching and heart breaking story set in the 1930s during the Japanese invasion of Nanking. Immensely powerful, intense, and sorrowful.
The movie captures the brutality of war, the abuses against the innocent, the contrast and tension between those that sell their dignity (at least that's the perceived way) and those that keep their innocence, and self-sacrifice.
There are so many beautiful details about this movie that it's hard to enumerate them all. But to point some of them:
- the warfare scenes are brutal and intelligent; even if farfetched at times
- the romance and flirting is done in a classy, funny, and intelligent manner
- the mutual and superficial disdain that hides the jealously between the prostitutes and the students, which is later replaced by compassion and empathy
- the rising to the occasion and self-sacrifice
- the coming of age and loss of innocence

From Wikipedia:
"No matter what wars or disasters happen in history, what surrounds these times is life, love, salvation and humanity. I hope those things are felt in this story. The human side of the story was more important to me than the background of the Nanjing massacre. Human nature, love and sacrifice – these are the things that are truly eternal. For me, the event is the historical background of the film. But the enduring question of the story is how the human spirit is expressed in wartime." -- Zhang Yimou on the film's message.

[introduction card]: In the Autumn of 1937, having conquered Shanghai, Japan turned its sights to the Chinese capital, Nanking. Making an especially dark chapter of human history, over 200,000 people lost their lives in the relentless battle for control of the city. Under impossible conditions, ordinary people fought for their very survival. This story is inspired by true events.

Yu Mo: Sometimes the truth is the last thing we need to hear.

Yu Mo: Don't do anything foolish! So many people have died. Even hell is packed. Why should you add to the crowd?

George Chen: We can't just throw our lives away. Life is a sacred gift. It's not ours to throw away.

Priest John: The way you are now is what I like the best. I see you. I see everything that you've been through. And I want all of that Mo. I want all of it. I love it. I love it all.
Yu Mo: Are you going to fall in love with me?
Priest John: I already have.
...
Priest John: I wanna promise you something. When this war is over I'm gonna find you and I'm gonna take you home.
Yu Mo: No. After tonight my body will no longer be mine. Take me home now.

Student: [narrating] Until this day I still don't know what happened to the women of the Qin Huai River. I never learned all of their names and never saw them being taken away by the Japanese. So I always imagine... I imagine myself standing by the large round window watching them walk in once again.
