watching the fifth element is like watching a comic book that has come to life. luc besson has a unique vision and somehow he was able to transfer that vision to film. this film is stylish and colorful and it's just plain fun to watch. milla jovovich does a great job portraying leeloo... a part that could have been an absolute disaster! throw bruce willis, ian holm and gary oldman into the mix and you've got a great go-to popcorn movie that can be watched over and over again! Wow, this movie is so funny haha. All the jokes really land and the siliness of it works really well. It certainly isn't stupid, annoying or obnoxious at all. And don't get me started on the writing. Such natural dialogue that also manages to be funny or silly. Certainly not very expositional in nature or makes the characters a bunch of caricatures and idiots. It's so mature and deep, not some of the most immature and childish shit I've ever seen haha. Witty and clever too! the movie comes from some very rich inspirations, artistically speaking. few 90's sci-fi blockbusters age as well as this one had, because most of them were a tad too overzealous with the cgi. mortal kombat and lost in space spring to mind- both have some impressive visuals... and some abysmal ones. yet, the fifth element is mostly tight as a drum. the humor and action work in lockstep, eliciting laughs through and with all the explosive set pieces. pound for pound, this movie is relentlessly entertaining and is an audio/visual delight. demo quality picture for the 4k uhd format, often read more

i watched this once on tv about 12 years ago. my memory of it is basically a nonsensical fever dream involving absurd costumes, a flying car chase scene, and weird characters. and while those things are very much present in the film, it was a whole lot more coherent than i remembered. campy as fuck, but coherent. so it had an element of surprise to it in the regard. (the rare sixth element) there's some absolutely adorable state of the art late 90s cgi which has aged about as well as you'd expect. probably my biggest positive here is the worldbuilding. this feels almost like lord of the rings... read more
