wow... sam mendes does it again. in his first three films he has made three beautiful, engaging and excellent films. what a director. jarhead is his third film. a war film, a comedy film (at least the first half), a drama on the effects of war, a parable on war, it's sort of like full metal jacket: the iraq years.
starring jake gyllenhaal (starting his road to master actor), jamie foxx, the underrated and always awesome peter skaarskarg, chris cooper and a whole slew of recognizable faces, this films acting is, no surprise, excellent. it is gyllenhaal and skaarsgard though that really shine.
with his previous two films, mendes and his cinematographer created some beautiful and stunning images. they feel like nothing compared to this film. every shot here was more stunning and beautiful than the last. just when you think it couldn't get any better the next shot is and it is this way the whole movie. i was blown away from shot one to shot last.
this film is also highly enjoyable. it is very entertaining. it will make you laugh, a lot. it will entertain you. it will keep you glued to your seat. it will keep you guessing at what is going to happen (and you might or might not be right but it never really matters in the end). it has a kick-ass soundtrack to keep your pulse pounding as you watch. all in all it is a wondrous experience.
what prevents it from getting top marks, 5 stars, a higher rating is two things. small things, but things none the less. first and most importantly is the fact that in the end it isn't the most original of stories. we've seen the story of the soldier that wants to kill but never gets into any action, only we've never seen it this good. also, full metal jacket: the iraq years is very close in tone and structure to full metal jacket. never a bad thing to mimic kubrick but it doesn't bode well for originality.
second, this movie could of been 10 minutes shorter. if not shorter then tighter (at the end). it is impeccably edited throughout but i felt during the last 15/10 minutes it was or could of been done. the film needed these scenes to wrap up the story, they just seemed slower than the rest of the film; not as strong, not as tight. or maybe i was just tired?
jarhead was, in the end, excellent. one of the best war films of the 21st century, if not the best (i can't think of a better one from after 1999). i loved it and having always wanted to see it it ended up being not the film i expected. it ended up being much better.
great, great stuff.
