Jeffrey "The Dude" Lebowski, a Los Angeles slacker who only wants to bowl and drink white Russians, is mistaken for another Jeffrey Lebowski, a wheelchair-bound millionaire, and finds himself dragged into a strange series of events involving nihilists, adult film producers, ferrets, errant toes, and large sums of money.
I'm an interesting creature, ladies and gentlemen. I am a movie critic that both understands other critics and gets confused by their ultimate decision on a film. I may hate a movie, but understand why critics love it, or I may side with them and love it as well...but once in a great while, I run into a movie that is overall loved and considered a cult classic that I just...don't understand. Trust me on this though, ladies and gentlemen, I tried very hard to distinguish what made The Big Lebowski God's gift to mankind in every critics mind while to me...left me feeling as if my day had been wasted.
An adventure tale that seems more of a Neverending Story than Epic Classic.
"This is considered an 'irreverent comedy', I prefer the term 'irrelevant'"
Yes, people do consider this entire movie more or less a cult classic, contributing a major portion of that to the story - something some people dignify as "epic". I have to admit that while yes, this movie has a big astonishing adventure - so do many other movies like it. That being said, I have no issues with the actual plot itself, but rather the pacing it takes to get to the next point. It undoubtedly and purposefully elongates each scene as far as it will stretch, repeating lines and jokes - hoping the general audience will pick up on its quick-witted one-liners...which they unmistakably do. However, it takes a smart and bold writer to elongate a scene - because audience members will eventually tap their toes, drowning in impatience.
This is also considered an "irreverent comedy", which while it may be true - I prefer the term "irrelevant" and I sometimes question how funny it truly is - but then again, comedy is relative, and in my opinion, one of the most diverse forms of entertainment available. There is no form of universal comedy - so I won't pick on that too much. I'll just leave it at this - I was bored and just didn't get 75% of the movie.
Great characters! One bad egg that might spoil the rest.
There couldn't possibly a review out there for The Big Lebowski without mentioning and reviewing the characters on screen - because I honestly believe that's a big part of why this movie is a cult classic - the characters are indeed memorable. I'll start off by saying...I actually like most of the characters, and believe their roles match the actors and vice versa - so I'd give this rating a 10 if it weren't for (and this is probably where I'll get 95% of the hate) "The Dude". Look, I get it, lazy guy and doesn't really care about anything saves the day - almost in a stoner movie kind of way. I do, it makes sense, and the character itself is a memorable one - but as much as I love Jeff Bridges...I didn't like him or believe him as this character.
This could be due to a number of things, mostly...I've seen him in terribly serious roles, and I do find him incredibly talented - and this felt like a joke. I think a number of other actors could have taken on the role better than he.
I was bored, but maybe you won't be?
The Big Lebowski is famous nowadays for both reasons that make sense to me and reasons that don't. I get it, the characters are memorable because they are strange. I get it, it's an "epic" adventure movie, but what I don't get is how it magnifies an audience, making them a fan for life. I personally was bored and never really chuckled except maybe once. In short, it wasn't my thing. I was easily distracted by everything around me, and was looking forward to its end so I could watch a TV show that I was positive would be better than this. It's two hours, and to me, it felt like it was 6 hours. It dragged on, it repeated itself, and just took forever to do anything...and in my personal opinon...is just boring as sin.
For my recommendation, I'm not sure who to recommend this to. It's obviously a cult classic, so to any film lover in general, I'd say to give it a go. There's a good chance anyone will like it and that I'm just the odd ball out...so hey, play it by chance. You might end up falling in love with The Big Lebowski.
