the last time i'd seen this was december 2002 on the first date with the lady who is now my wife. it amazes me just how beautifully made these films are. the care and attention just explodes out the screen at you. i guess i could recommend this as a first date movie :) read more

extended edition the high point in this isn't helm's deep, it's the relationship between frodo and gollum, and frodo's sympathy for gollum and how it manifests. it's by far the smartest writing of the trilogy of films, and unfortunately only takes up a small portion. the rest for me was ups and downs, like why does the film stop for 20 minutes to go into aragorn's love triangle? why have we had zero character development between these three characters? (seriously, there aren't actually any character beats between aragorn/gimli/legolas, they're just best buds at the end of fellowship because.... read more
