as a preface, i should state that this is my first time viewing anything star trek related. maybe i would have enjoyed this more had i seen some of the original series, but for now, it was majorly lackluster.
the only strong positives i can commend the film for are the grandiose score and goofy — yet still competent — visuals. only through the use of both can the audience get truly acclimated within the environment that wise proposes.
i don't necessarily have an issue with the film's slow pace, but it seems to have nothing fruitful to deliver within it's trotting tempo. the visual effects and performances aren't nearly impressive enough to warrant countless moments to admire both the illusions and the actors' reaction shots.
while the score and visuals are champions at the world-building withing the film, there isn't any other aspect that cares to pick up any slack. the production/costume design is uninspired and drab, and the performances have no spark in them that allowed me to fully buy into the world put in front of me.
the motion picture was a bore, with little to no redeeming aspects. i can only hope this gets better on rewatch once i've dipped my toes into the series, but as for right now, i can't promise that this won't leave my mind by tomorrow morning.
