it's been ages since i watched predator, but i remember enough of it to realize how different this sequel is, urban jungle puns aside. while it is a stand-alone movie, it does rely on the viewer knowing what the predator is; since the characters are not aware of anything, nothing about its abilities, actions and motivations is explained for a good while.
it's gloriously 80s: voodoo drug dealers, loud sex, gratuitously naked woman as a bonus in a scene, copious amounts of gore, hails of bullets, thick accents, dodgy line readings, over the top everything. unlike bad b-movies or contemporary franchise shlock, it also has a police investigation story that doesn't use genre tropes as obvious shortcuts in the rush to get to the next massacre and a decent enough script.
the characters are nothing to write home about (earnest, stubborn cop with a temper "just doing his job", then "it's now personal", his serious partner that he'd known his whole life, badass latina female cop with an accent who literally grabs a joker colleague by the balls, said joker i.e. the annoying new guy, the mysterious federal agent with an agenda, the captain stuck between the main team and the feds, and so on, so on) but they work well enough to support the story, and no one veers into cringe-worthy caricature or juvenile antics. there is also no extra fat like family issues, love interests, drinking/whatever personal drama, and the like, which i really appreciated.
the action is decent, and the predator parts are excellent. seeing from its pov works perfectly to show its stalking - without being overdone - and the sense of it being alien, using technology and following rules for its hunt. i don't remember how the predator pov was used in the original, so i can't tell if this movie merely copies the first or not. maybe it does, and i'm giving it too much credit here. still, it makes for an enjoyable watch. (it also lifts the whiff of racism in the predator design from the original, adding some dubious local color in the form of gangs.)
unfortunately, halfway through it turns into a dumb action movie, with the maverick hero taking charge and succeeding where other trained professionals fail, blatantly by virtue of being the protagonist. going against a predator mano a mano, nuff said. the ship is also disappointing, and while the predators turning and leaving does make sense, it doesn't gel with the predator as a lone hunter. nothing in the last stretch really works, and it's too bad.
