film #19 in operation: rewatch my blu-rays i havent seen in a long time
after saw ii set a high bar for the franchise, saw iii came along and continued to codify the most important aspects of the series. darren lynn bousman is back behind the camera for this film, which looks to move past the era of john kramer and set up his legacy for others to follow. we're not post-john yet, and that's great because this film gives tobin bell a ton to work with which is to its benefit. bell and shawnee smith are the beating heart of this series, and their interplay here is top-notch while bahar soomekh matches up with them well as lynn, the doctor kidnapped by amanda to try and keep john alive while his latest game plays out. the three of them easily make the most compelling half of this film.
the problem, such as it is, comes more in the pedestrian second half. jeff is the man trapped in jigsaw's latest and more conventional game, and while angus macfadyen isn't bad here he simply has less to work with. jeff is the mouse trapped in the maze, as he has to go through several traps to try and move past the tragic death of his son in a car accident. the gore that serves as saw's meat and potatoes lies mostly on this side, and there's plenty of it to be sure. but while the traps are as ingenious as ever and the concept behind them is inspired, there are a bit of diminishing returns.
there is a lot to like in this film for horror fans, to be sure. the climax is spectacular on just about every level and the cast pretty largely knocks it out of the park. bousman does some great work with color in this movie while keeping to the grimy, gritty aesthetic of the franchise. but it also feels about 5 or 10 minutes too long on the jeff side; every time it cut away from the trio in the makeshift operating room, my interest ticked down a bit. and look, regarding that side i know that this is a film series built around sadistic thrills, but this is the first in the series that feels like it's doing it not for story, but just because the audience demands it.
all in all, saw iii almost reaches its immediate predecessor's heights, but comes just a tiny bit short. it's still well worth watching for fans of sadistic horror though.
