for some reason, "stand by me" (the song) hit me harder in this movie compared to other times i've heard it. in itself, the final 10 minutes of the movie are perfect. i was pleased that the plot got going almost immediately, and that even though not much "action" happened and stuff, it doesn't get boring with the adventures of the kids. it's excellent in its simplicity, although i feel that the gang of bully antagonists would have been a bit more effective in that regard without so many characters, even if they were background. but yes, it's a very good adventure that becomes melancholy, a... read more

wild to think that one of these kids has me blocked on twitter. even among my carefully curated letterboxd follows, this film has almost universally positive ratings. in my hand-picked list of people who have preferences that let me gauge how much i'm going to enjoy things before even watching them. so, despite this being an 80s movie based on a stephen king story, i went in with high hopes. what i got was 90 wonderful minutes watching a bunch of one dimensional annoying asshole kids being one dimensional annoying assholes. this all seems like it's trying to evoke a certain kind of nostalgia... read more

Four kids embark on a trek through the woods to find the corpse of a boy their same age who was killed by a speeding train. Adapted by Bruce A. Evans and Raynold Gideon from Stephen King's 1982 novella "The Body", the film bookends its main plot as an extended memory from one of its protagonists (played by Dreyfuss) who has become a professional writer and uses the title song (by Ben E. A perfect snapshot of the transition from childhood to adulthood: the realization of how flawed adults are, that the system (in whatever form it takes) isn't always fair, how understanding something doesn't make it harmless, the fear of the future and all the baggage we have to take with us.
